5.4 problems

I have 2000 E150 with 5.4L with 88,000 miles. I tow 6000 lb trailer a bit, no problem. Gas mileage about 7.5 - 8 mpg when towing, around town 12 and 17.5 on highway at about 75mph. Only problems so far are new thermostat at around 80,000 and now need both Exhaust Manifold Gaskets replaced, and there is one Exhaust Manifold stud broken. Mechanic says, they are all the same and are notorious for 2 studs breaking off on each side. Expensive touch, Exhaust problem apparently due to cast manifolds and alum heads.

My 98 Expy - 104k miles - threw a piston and rod through the right side of the engine last Sunday morning - don't know why...maybe swallowed a valve...huge (fist-sized) hole in right side of block....

I have a 2000 F-150 extended cab with the 3.55 RA, 4 wd and an airbag suspension for the rear axle. It has 79K miles now. I tow a 7400 lb. (approx.) TT. On flat ground I get 11-12 mpg towing. In WV, with their larger (than Ohio) hills, I get 9.5mpg. I drive about 55 - 60 mph usually and don't use OD. Our total combined weight is about 12,800 lb. (our GCWR is 13K lb). Our TT can carry up to 10K lb. for its GVWR. So far we have never been close.

In the next two months I will be ordering an E-350 with the v-10 and 4.10 RA. I know I am using the 5.4 to its limit in the bigger hills and I hate to listen to the motor scream up the longer grades. I want comfort and lots of room for traveling when I retire soon. Thus the different ride.

I have liked the truck we have. A defective radio, leaking RA seal and a cracked exhaust manifold are the trucks only problems. It uses about 1 qt. of oil in 3.5-4000 miles. I use Valvoline Max Life and Fram filters.

I drive an older sedan (2000 Buick Regal) to work to keep the miles off the truck now. Used to average 22K per year. 30 mpg is better than 17 mpg daily and the savings in fuel pays for service and insurance.

Sure hate to think about getting a different vehicle.
