I hope someone can help me here. I have a '91 aerostar swb 2wd 3.0 automatic.since the day my wife bought it, the fuel gauge has been stuck in the full position. when i unplugged it, the gauge went right to empty. when i plugged it back in, it went right to full again. On the crownvic.net board, a few of the members there had the same problem, and said they solved it by replacing the "anti-slosh" module. could it be the same problem here, and if so, where is it located? I would rather not drop the tank if i don't have to.
take the dash cover off (two screws if I remember correctly). The anti-slosh is a small (about 1.5 x 1.5 in) circuit board mounted right behind the gauge. I bought a used instrument panel on ebay and replaced mine from there....
There can also be a cracked solder joints on the back of the slosh module that will cause the same thing. Solder them back up and it fixed the problem.
if it was purchased recently, there was a thing here in FL and several other states where the fuel was not refined properly leaving too much sulfur in it.
apparently the sulfur caused something to corrode on the sending units causing a full reading all the time, there were a lot of people running out of gas about that same time.
alrighty, now. I took the dash apart, took out the module, cleaned the contacts, and put it back together, and now the fuel gauge reads "empty"!!! So i guess now it's time to drop the tank, and check the fuel sender. kf4zra, my wife bought it 3 yrs ago, and the gauge hasn't worked from day one, but thanks for trying. JTHill24, the module was fine as far as i could see. i used a high powered magnifying glass, and couldn't see any broken, or burned joints anywhere. cookkd, 5 screws for the cover, and four for the instrument panel itself. But on that note, it's clear that someone else had taken the dash apart before, and did a sh@# job of doing so.So before i drop the tank, i'm going to start with the wiring from the dash, and work my way back.
One more thing you can try. Some had a slosh module and some didn't. You can go to the local wreaking yard and get instrument panel without and put it in and see if it fixes it.
The differance is on the ones with the SM a hole was punched in one of the traces that goes to the SM. On the ones without the SM there is no hole punched.
I had to do that until I fixed mine.
