Hi everyone...I just purchased a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT, 4.0 SOHC, 21,000 miles on the vehicle. I've had explorers with the 4.0 engine, but this is my first SOHC 4.0. I was surprised at how it starts when you turn the key. It ramps up in RPM very quickly, then ramps down very quickly. When it first ramps up cold, it sounds different than when started hot. It almost sounds like valve train clattering when started cold, like insufficient oil at the overhead cams. I've heard that oil starvation can occur on the SOHC if the check valve in the oil system lets oil return to the pan while sitting, causing a delay in pumping oil to the overhead cams on startup. I may just be imagining the worst....just wondering if any other SOHC owners have had questions/answers about the way these things start up. By the way, got this one from a Chevy dealer, and they had just put the wrong oil (10W-30) in it. I quickly switched to 5W-30 Mobil 1.
The clattering noise you hear when you first start it up is probably related to your camshaft tensioners. They became so much of a problem that Ford voluntarilly extended the warranty on them to 6 years, 72K miles under prgram ONP 00M12.
I noticed that also ... on startuup especially cold starts ... but i like the sound hehehee ... I would recommend a 5w40 synthetic Like mobil 1 or Syndurance from Citgo , also prefill your filter also after an oil change.
