I have a 74 F-250 and I am trying to get the play out of the column shift. The shift lever is still tight and the spring is good but when I put it in a gear there is quite a bit of side to side play. What part should I be checking for wear? I had the steering wheel off and took everything apart but didn't really know what to look for. I am not looking forward to taking that apart again and want to know what to look at next time. Took me forever to get those square bolts back in their slots.
Hey Jake! Check linkage under the hood (easiest to get to from under the truck). Where the steering column comes through the firewall you'll see the shift linkage connected to a rod which, if I remember right, connects to a lever that links to the tranny. There are little plastic bushings in between the linkages. If they become worn you'll start to experience a lot of play in the shift lever. I don't know of any particular places to find replacements but check to see if this is your problem and if so you might try the online store here at FTE.
Thanks for the help Ivan. I checked everything outside the cab and that part is still pretty good. I think it is in somewhere by the steering wheel. What runs down the steering column from the coulmn shift to the linkage outside the cab? I think maybe that might be worn a bit. How hard is this to check? I took the cowl almost all the way off but couldn't quite see down there, and was afraid to take it apart anymore than I had it.
Do you know where I could find the bushing that goes on the T-case shifter? <!I have posted about it but it keeps getting moved to the transmission forum.> Thanks for the help, Jake
