When driving, I hear a repetitive squeaking noise coming from the back. When I apply the brakes alittle, it goes higher pitched. Apply brakes more, it goes away. I looked underneath and the inside of the brake drum on one side is coated with dirt and grease (smells it too), other side is clean. Whats most likely the problem here? I'm clueless about drum brakes esp. on these vehicles. How hard is this to fix/replace?
From the sounds of it, you're either leaking brake fluid or axle lube. Take the wheel and drum off that side and check it out. If the shoes are soaked with grease or brake fluid, they will need to be replaced on both sides after you fix the leak.
Check out the axle, tranny, and transfer case forum, I just posted directions on changing an axle seal yesterday.
Thanks Andy, I'll take a look. I'm almost positive its the axle seal because its musty-smelling like GL5, not brake fluid. Rear end is full so its probably just seeping. What brand seal did you end up going with?
Also, did you use the limited slip additive of the Ford variety?

I'll have to check and see what brand of seals we use at the shop. I haven't done this on my own truck (yet, knock on wood). I used the additive from advance auto parts when i did my diff lube change, I don't remember the name of it.
