ignition switch
My 2000 explorer locked up and I could not turn the wheel, the gear shift, nor the ignition switch. After struggling with it for over 5 minutes and about to give up, it freed and I was able to turn the key and start. Now I am paranoid that this will happen in a remote place. What is the probable cause. If it is the switch, how difficult to replace and will I need special tools to do it myself?

My guess would be a bad lock cylinder. Take a look in your Haynes, it's probably very simple to replace. Could'nt hurt to stop by a Ford dealer parts dept. they can pull up an exploded view of the lock mechanism & linkage to the ignition switch which might be worth a look.
