On my 3/4 Ton with the 4:10 gears and a healthy running 351M what gear would you guys pull in, Theres a pull comin up saturday and i am thinkin about pulling my truck for the first time.
Most guys with less than 500 HP and stock transmissions have the best luck in low second. I have been pulling for 8 years and have finished second in points for the last 2 seasons.
It's not pulling, but in deep mud (up to the tops of the 31x12" snow tires), with sand under about 30" of mud, I made it through, repeatedly, in 4LOW in 3rd gear (435NP) with a basically stock 360 plus headers and 750 Holley 4bbl on 2bbl-to-4bbl adapter - had to run it around 3500-4000RPM to keep going. Got it stuck and had to dig it out once, but I stupidly let off the gas in the middle of it.
Sounds like with 350+cid '73-79 is good at either 2nd or 3rd in 4LOW depending on how much traction and torque you have.
when my dad pulled his 1976 F250 ranger, 4.10 gears, 31'' tires, np 435, 390 (2) holleys, he used 2nd gear low side. he said it pulled good and can still remember how it pulled even after 20years
