The other day I noticed that my exhaust had gotten a little bit louder. Upon inspection, I noticed that there was a tear in this "funny looking" steel woven flexible type of pipe located between the cats and the muffler. A friend of mine told me that this was a baffle. Anyways, I cut it off and installed a new section of pipe in it's place. Now unfortunately, I seem to have a low sort of rumble and a vibration from the exhaust when I put the van into gear. It is fine while idyling, but makes this sound only when I'm in gear with the brakes on. It is fine when I accellerate. But as soon as there is a load on the engine I have this problem. Was this thing some sort of baffle or vibration damper? Any help is appreciated!
I bought a new flex pipe from a local parts store. Had to do a little cutting and grunting to get it in though. But my wife sure appreciates it! It's keeps the van really quiet and free from vibration.
