My '94 Explorer pings and the Check Engine light comes on randomly. No codes came up during 2 testing sessions. My mechanic said to start with new plug wires and plugs. Does anyone have a recomedation as to what would be best for plugs? The vehicle has 97,000 miles.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 09:23 PM (EST)]I've tried them in another vehicle (Bosch Plats) and for the life of me couldnt tell the difference. When it came time to replace the plugs in my explorer, I decided to put oem motorcraft plugs in. Guess what saved all kinds of bucks, and runs just fine. By the way, at the risk of reinforcing my reputation as a cheapskate, when i replace the wires in mine I fully intend to go to Pep Boys and get a standard set. I'm no engineer, but I really dont believe some of these aftermarket parts are as superior as they're cracked up to be. I'm willing to learn however.
Somewhat limited info provided in the help request. However, for pinging problems onthese motors, try cleaning the mass air flow sensor (MAF). Remove the MAF from the intake tube, just past the air filter box. Spray off the contacts with carb cleaner. Reassemble making sure to keep all surfaces clean. Test drive for power increas and pinging elimination.
I spent $145.00 on a tune up and platinum plugs. It helped a little.
Then my 76 year old neighbor said to clean the MAP. So I broke out a can of Starting fluid and removed the MAP and sprayed the heck out of it. Cleaning the wire filiments is the trick to this. You wont get any codes for this either. And sure enough that did the trick Power's back no Check engine and much wiser all though I'm still lite in the wallet.
