those gray electrical connectors? (yeah some are black) You know the ones that have more than one wire. By the time i get a screwdriver on each of those two locking tabs I don't have a hand left to pull them apart.
What to you guys do about this? Is there a tool i'm not aware of?
I'm sure it's not the most sanitary way of going about it, but I have the tendancy to grab the other side (the side that your thumbs aren't holding) with my teeth and pull...
Though I think the easier option would be to break one of the tabs off... (depending on which it is, most of the ones I've noted can be held with one tab just fine...)
Or there's the slow option... both thumbs on the tabs, then pull the other end with your little finger/palm... I don't know which is easier, I think they're all a PITA...
I usually break the tabs or just leave one then zip-tie the connector together or to the wires so there is no strain on it. Sometimes the plastic is so brittle that the tabs break anyway.
YES There is a tool! I got one at napa. It was made by lisle, it is called a wire terminal tool, #56500. It was about $10. Really comes in handy sometimes.
oh, you mean to just get the connectors apart. I just use two small flat bladed screw drivers, squeeze them together with one hand, pull with the other.
The only thing that will get those dang connectors apart is practice. In my job, I have to disconnect a variety of different connectors. The easiest ones (I find anyway) are the Deutch connectors.
Really, the best way to get them apart is to look at them first, figure out HOW they come apart, then proceed with your index finger to pull the tab up and pull the connector apart. Another kind is you push the tab into the connector body with your thumb, and pull it apart.
The connector with 2 tabs, one on each side, well, those are the hard ones. You need two index fingers to pull the tabs away from the connector body.
What usually helps is if you try to free it up first by (before disconnecting it) pushing it together, and pulling it apart (still without disconnecting it) a few times before you attempt releasing the locking tabs. This also helps you to figure out how the thing comes apart when you watch what happens to the tabs.
As Torque mentioned the cheapest tool is to break one of the tabs, but the tool carriers do sell them at premium, and so does Napa, bought one for 22.95.By the way the it was a POS.Torques ideas is cheaper and as effective.
