fordman , you got me confused , forgive me , I cannot change the crank main bearings without pulling the engine but I can replace the rear seal . how can this be ? Sounds like it would be easiest to just pull the motor and short block it . the top end is beautiful . my worry is this , I need 6 months before I can do this , can I nurse the mains that long ? heavy oil ? I have a new 4-speed and 2 speed transfer case that needs to go in , best to do it all at one shot .
thanks J&B ( aka jack and barb )
ummh, you can change the bearings w/o pulling the engine.
you can change a ROPE type rear main seal w/o pulling the trans (may need to get another 'special tool' to install the new one. I've posted before how to 'form fit' a new one, as have others.
You have 'side seals' in grooves on the rearmost main cap. They can be replaced without dropping the trans/crank or pulling the engine.
You cannot change the front crank seal w/o pulling timing cover.

I've replaced the rear main seal without pulling the engine. I just unbolted the engine and tranny mounts and jacked it up a little. I just handled it.
J&B as i stated before i said you couldnt change main bearings from in the truck but it looks like i was wrong, looks like other guys have done it, however i think it would be easiest to pull the motor and put it on the stand where its easiest to work with it. but thats all up to you.
you can change the rear main seal from in the truck, no problem, ive done it, jack the motor up 2-3 inches, drop the oil pan, slide the pan back till it hits the oil pump and there should be enough room to get the rear main cap off, then replace the seal put it back togather and have fun.
as for your question about nursing the mains 6 months, yes i think it would be fine just take it easy and run heavier oil in it, good luck.

Fordman , you were partly right , no room for a rachet & cheater bar . I even went out and bought an air impact tool to do the job , but have decided to wait till the garage is built .now running a 20-50 oil and retimed the truck , you can barely hear it now and only at a low speed . so in the mean time I am rebuilding a 205 transfer case so all can be done at one time .
thanks Jack
