Hey, I'm 17 and I've been driving a 1995 3.0L ranger that I bought for 500$, It's a great truck (I've always been a Ford guy) and I'm looking into giving it some of that extra "edge" in power, because I'd really like to build it up into a street truck. My problem is this: Since this is my first vehicle, I really have no idea where to start. The engine has over 200,000 miles on it, so is it even worth upgrading? I don't want to take this truck to a shop, and hand over a wad of money and say "Hey, attach this, this and this", I'd actually like to do a fair share of the work myself. any advice on where to get information, and where to start would be very much appreciated.
Well, one of the most cost effective ways to gain HP is to increase engine size. With the miles you have, you may want to consider finding a Ranger with a 4.0L. You got your Ranger for a great price, and, depending on the overall condition, you should be able to get your money back and then some more.

See, the thing about it is I bought this truck from my family, and I sorta have an attachment to it (however lame it may sound) and I really would like to avoid selling it. I was actually considering looking for a 4.0 engine to swap it with towards the end of the year if that is possible
You can go that road, but you'll need all of the wiring associated with the engine, different exhaust, rad hoses, maybe a larger radiator (would have to check), maybe a different fan shroud (?), and I'm not sure that a 4.0 will bolt up to the 3.0 tranny. If you could get your hands on a well wrecked ranger with the engine + etc you need, it would be oh so much easier. There is no doubt the job can be done, but it's some work, including homework before you begin.
If I understand correctly the 3.0 and 4.0 both use the Mazda M5OD-R1 manual transmission. I'm not sure about automatics, but I'm guessing that they are also the same. I thought I read somewhere that the 3.0 and the 4.0 have different engine mounts which prevent you from just dropping in a 4.0 but I am not 100% sure on this.
