Having done the master cylinder conversion on my truck, and having used the wilwood proportioning valve, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make sure I had the proportioning valve adjusted properly? I have been adjusting it in and out but have not yet been comfortable leaving it in one position. Is there a recommended way to test this?
The instruction sheet that came with my Wilwood Proportioning Valve says this:
"Front-to-rear brake balance should be adjusted so that the front wheels lock-up slightly before the rear wheels. This adjustment can only be done by testing vehicle braking and adjusting valve to derive the best front-to-rear brake balance."
Skip Porterfield, in his article "Brake Tech for early model Ford F-100 Pickup trucks through 1964", says at the bottom of the article,
"You will need to drive the truck to adjust the proportioning valve but it is an easy job. Just increase or decrease the pressure to the rear drums until the brakes don’t lock up when you stop hard."
A good place to test the lock up point is a gravel road. Locking up the brake on asphalt is more erratic and more of a jolt for all parties involved. Having a friend to help watch the tires is helpful too.
