I have a 2000 f-350 4x4 diesel automatic, the truck went in to the shop because the hubs were not working properly (it has the auto/lock hubs). Today when I hauled the horses to a penning clinic, the overdrive light started to flash and there is a low rumbleing noise that sounds like it is coming from the front end. this only happens when going over a bump and lasts for a few hundred feet. any ideas? -- thanks Greg
Its gonna need new hubs and or front wheel bearings ,these use a sealed bearing setup that goes bad. When hitting a bump the axle shaft binds against the hubs internals and spins creating the rumble or vibration. Also inspect the front axle u-joints at the same time.
Rich Thanks --I suspected the hubs, it has had trouble since I bought the truck, The used car dealer is trying to get out of replacing them by suggesting a "good cleaning is nessasary"-- BS -- if I ever heard it!! thanks again! GREG
The needle bearings inside the hub that the 4x4 driveshaft ride upon are shot. When you hit a bump, the axel locks in momentarily (same thing was happening to mine) Problem is, if the set is shot the axle is probably shot as well. You will need to mic the race on the shaft to tell for sure when you take it off. That axel only comes as a unit from Ford. The anti-lock brake light flashing typically means your wheel bearings are shot as well. The vibration causes the anti-lock to show a fault. The needle bearings above will come with the wheel bearing unit if thats the case.
Here is a link that will show you how to take it apart yourself.
Alan ----thanks for the info, I replaced the hubs today and the noise and rumble are still there. I will check the bearings this weekend, so for now I will be heading to work with the 76 highboy. Thanks for all the help--Greg
