i have a 99 f350 with an automatic transmission that shifts hard under light acceleration. I have a banks transcommand but do not know if that is why it is shifting hard. The product is designed to work only under hard acceleration. Heck I don't even know if it works. If anyone has an idea or similar problem let me know.
It's your Banks. I had one on the last truck I owned. You can disable it by unplugging the umbilical between the transmission and the Transcommand and plugging in the disabler plug that came with the kit. You did save that didn't you? If you do that, I would go to great lengths to protect the bare plug from the elements. Don't just leave it dangling open and exposed.
Did you install it or did you have someone else do it? I put mine in myself. It came with pretty concise instructions for installation along with some symptoms that will manifest if installed incorrectly. Hard shifting was not on the list. I can't remember what they were, I've sold the truck and it all went with it. In fact they said that the shifting would be "firmer". I found it to be the case with mine. If there was any sort of uphill slope at all it would be a good jerk when it shifted from second to third. Towing the trailer would produce a real hard shift. But I preferred it to the mushy shift that it would do without it. I would suggest trying the blockout plug and see if you like it that way. But you really need to use it if you have any sort of power upgrade to the engine.
On my current truck I solved that problem for good, I got the six speed stick and never will get an automatic again. I was too worried about the heat developed inside the torque converter when towing the 13,000 pound trailer up Siskiyou pass.
Have the same situation with my '96. It's nice when towing to have the more abrubt shift but it is still very hard when I'm just feathering the throttle, especially when cold. I also was under the impression the Transcomand wasn't suppose to change anything unless ya put your foot in it. Don't know if it's not working right (been this way since new) but I'm gonna get rid of it before it tears something up.
I had it installed but i will try what you said. I wish i had the six speed but i got the truck at a pretty good price back in the day. Thanks for the help.
mtncrawler, mine was as smooth as a stock shifter at all temperatures as long as I gave it less than 1/4 throttle, no matter what temperature the engine was. That truck had the 460 in it.
