96 explorer fuel gauge

here is the deal my gas gauge on my explorer is stuck on full it's hardly moving I should be almost empty but today it's showing 3/4 full
bad sender??

96 explorer fuel gauge

The sending unit goes from 15 to 170 ohms. What is different from vehicles in the past is that for this one, 170 ohms is a full tank. So if your tank is about empty, the sender might be 30 ohms (1/8 tank) and the connector might have 110 ohms resistance. That gives you 140 ohms in series and you read 7/8 on the tank gauge. The sender is Y/W with the ground return B/Y. Just try unplugging the connector and reconnecting it a few times. And get yourself a cheap Digital Volt Meter to measure the sender. Last one I saw was less than $4.
