You may have to search around for specific products but, one of the things the Sport Compact guys use is a Cold Air Intake (CAI). The CAI will add a little different "note" to the engine when you open it up. Obviously if you want overall sound, you can look to the cat-backs too. I think alot of guys here like the Gibson models or Flowmaster.

I agree on the Exhaust upgrade as well. I ended up with a Magnaflow Stainless Cat Back system on my truck, sounds pretty good to my ears without being excessively loud.

Yes the exhaust will help performance. However, you have to understand that one bolt-on by it's self will only due so much. You have to pick some parts that will compliment each other. IE - if you put a CAI on (that is putting more air in) your engine then it will work better if it is complimented by headers and free-flow exhaust. You can go a step further and install an adjustable FPR and a mild cam upgrade.

The general rule of thumb is you have to give a little to get a little. Power is not free, so a free-flow exhaust will usually show a small loss in low-end torque and hp only to gain some up high. A mild set of cams may show great pickup and throttle respones in the mid-range but some losses may show in the low-end or the high-end. It depends on the profile and intended RPM range. Hope this helps.

Oh yea, and if you can turn a wrench with out fear of getting dirty..... You can DIY. If the system you are looking at requires welding, well you have to be a bit more skilled to do that.
