HELP with 96 explorer subwoofer...PLEASE read this!!!:)
Hi....first of all thanks for stopping and reading this.. I am lost. I have a 96 explorer and the WAY back speaker is blown.....I was told by someone that the only way I could have it replaced was through ford. Is this true? I have no idea what type of sub to get or where to get it installed. I am from wisconsin and would like ANY advice......I don't want to spend ALOT of money on this, but would like it to sound good. Is there anyway I can make it look and sound decent for under $300??? Please help, I was told that the only speaker I can put in the explorer was one from ford. Is this true? If not, what can I do to get this fixed. THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR READING!!!!! HELP!

I do not have any personal dealings with the factory sub box, but depending on the airspace in the box, any local stereo shop could sell you a sub to fit. I built my own fiberglass box and have a JL Audio 10" in the rear compartment where the factory sub normally is. It is not that hard to get to, if you feel comfortable taking apart you X. Its a little more complex than a doorpanel, but basically about the same type of work.
I would suggest going to a local stereo shop and talk to them about which subs they have that could work in the airspace in the factory enclosure. If they give you any hassle, let me know and I can find out from a friend on all the specs on the enclosure and what would be your best route.

THANK you so much for replying. That is what I was going to do it take it to a local car audio store and ask some questions. Do you have any idea a price range it would be? I don't think I am comfortable taking it apart....the cover in the back is already off...but I would have no idea what to do, how to rewire it. I appreciate all your help....that would be great if you had any more info. Thanks again! Angela

Well, from what I understand, the factory sub had the amp built into the enclosure, so it would just be a matter of taking the factory speaker out, and replacing the old with the new. 2 wires - tha's it. If the front cover is off the back, can you get to the speaker right now? If so, then you would not have to remove the back panel if you can get to the screws holding it in.
As far as price - a good quality speaker can range from $50.00 to $250.00 - depending on what brand, how much power it holds, its design, etc. For what you are looking for, I would say you should be able to find a good speaker and have it installed for less than $150.00. If you are going to use the factory amp, then it probably wouldn't be that much for the speaker and install. You really don't want the best speaker off the factory amp. It does more harm than good because you would be buying a speaker that relies on more power to sound it's potential. Make sense?!?!?!
I will call a friend tomorrow and ask him what his recomendations would be and post his opinion.
Guess I should ask - are you sure the speaker is blown, and not the amp?

That is a good point. I really have no idea if the speaker is blown or the amp??? How would I know, is there any way to tell????? When I turn the bass up it makes a loud cracking noise....I guess I would have to ask someone at a store?? As you can see I really don't know how I can get it fixed...but I LOVE music...and love having a good stereo I really do appreciate you helping me out....is an amp expensive too? THANK YOU

If you stop by a local shop, have them listen and tell you which it is. Of course they are going to tell you they can replace all of it with something else that will sound great(nature of business), but if you enjoyed what you had before and didn't want to drop a lot of money for better, why do it?
Personally, IMO, if you liked the factory system sound, then I would save my money and buy only what is needed for now. Then later save up for a total sound system at once, matching the components for what type of music you listen to, how loud you want it, how clear the sound, etc...
I will talk to a friend tomorrow, and if you get a chance to stop by a shop, do so and let me know what they say...

If you get no sound at all from the speaker, most likely the amp is fried. If you get sound but it makes popping or rattling sounds (basically, it sounds like *****), then your speaker is blown.
Check out www.crutchfield.com for info on a new woofer. www.sounddomain.com is another good site.

Well, I went to the stereo store tonight and talked to the guy for like an hour and a half. I am getting a 6 1/2" subwoofer put in, in place of the factory one that is blown and also getting two boston speakers installed in the front (because the back left speaker was gone and they are moving the front speakers to the back and installing the boston ones in the front). Anyway, I guess my question is...will the factory amp have enough power to supply to the new sub that has (i think he said the factory sub had somewhere between 30-40 watts and the new sub has around 75-80 watts). Will the facotry amp be able to handle the new sub.....I guess is what I am worried about. He said that there haven't been problems with the ones they have done before. Any other suggestions????? This was the most inexpensive route (compared to getting an amp also) Total for everything it is $300, is this a decent price???? I need your input please! Thanks!!!!!!!

Sounds like a lot to me. You can get a very good pair of 5x7 speakers for $100.00 and a good 8" woofer for $60.00-70.00. I know they will charge installationo, but it just seems like a lot of money.
The stock amp will be OK, but only that, OK. You would do yourself some good to upgrade to a better amp.

Massey -
What is there breakdown price for each item?
I have not had any dealings with Boston's in a few years, but they were excellent quality speakers. I would not worry about those. What type sub are they wanting to put in? And how much are they charging for installation?
Depending on what qualiy you are getting, and what they are charging for install, that could be a little high. But then again, I am used to getting my parts for cheaper (good to know people ), and doing the install myself, so the price could be reasonable.
One thing I would ask about is why are they using a 6" sub instead of an 8"...
HELP with 96 explorer subwoofer...PLEASE read this!!!:)
The breakdown is....$119 for the boston speakers ...(they were going to give me the eclipse for 119 but were out of stock..so upgraded to boston's which were $179 I think...so I get a good deal there) Then the 6 1/2" sub is $90 because isn't that the only thing I can put in in place of the factory sub...not being able to go any higher with a factory amp???? I think it is the only thing that will fit in that space??? Also, then the installation is $80 to put the front speaker in the rear driver side and put the new boston's in the front and to also install the amp. So that is about $290 plus tax! What do you think? I know it would be awesome to know someone who can do it....but I don't...and I keep thinking well it's 80 bucks but at least it's professionally installed??? The sub is a JL I think????? Does that make sense...JL something! Thanks....write back!!!!!!!

Sounds good to me. I didn't know JL made anything smaller than an 8" sub, but if it is JL Audio, then you should be happy with the quality you will get. I run a JL 10" in the same area as where yours is, just built my own enclosure for it. $80 is about normal for the labor also.
Sounds like you will be back in business in no time!!
Hope we were able to help some. Let us know how it sounds!!!
