My '93 Explorer XLT has a coolant leak somewhere, the radiator is full but the overflow res is bone dry, also it's running hot, I can not find a leak anywhere but can smell coolant when I park it. What am I missing?
Intake manifold gasket?
Or -- darest I say it -- head gasket? Any sign of coolant in the oil? Excessive white smoke out the exhaust? Figure that much out soon--you'll kill a motor quicker than prune juice through a skinny cowboy if you've got coolant in the oil. This is one case where I might recommend a coolant pressure test to find the leak.
Any idea how fast it leaks?
Had the same problem. Mine turned out to be the radiator. It was simple to replace and about $120. The leak was just slow enough that I could never see a puddle.
mrshorty and vegasmailman thanks for the replies, I apologise I was to frustrated last nite and didn't give enough info, here's what I've done....
New radiator, new water pump, new thermostat,no coolant in oil that I can tell, and no white smoke, pulled a spark plug on each side and no green on them. It leaks down fairly slow so I guess a pressure test is gonna be the best/only bet.
The overflow res, is know to leal around the hose at the bottom of the tank.{Fords craper idea} look and see if the fender well is staned under the tank {bet it is } you found your slow leak. Also a bad cap will let the coolent flow back in to the tank and leak out ,so check your cap too.
