I was given a 2.3L engine from a ranger today by a guy at work who was cleaning out his garage and wanted it gone. Anyways I was wondering if there is some casting number on it that could tell me the year of the vehicle it came out of. My guess year wise is late 80's. Also does this engine share a bell housing pattern with anyother engine? Thanks.
Does it have 2 spark plugs per cyl.?
Basic Ford casting #s would start with E,0 to 9. E9=89.
If memory serves, they share the same pattern with the 4.0.
AL.
Yeah the casting is on the block. Hmm I'm curious to find out what else they went into in 79. I"m going to use it as a pratice engine for my engine machining lab at school, if I do it well though there will be a part of me that will want to drop it into something.

Your memory must be failing, as it won't bolt to
a 4.0L bellhousing, but with mods, it will bolt to a
2.0L Pinto/Capri, it also came in the Courier pick up,
question is, front or rear sump oil pan...
Canzus, forgive my ignorance but to tell the difference between the front or rear sump pans it's just a mater of where the oil pickup is loacated correct? or am I wrong?
Really?? I beter sue the guy I bought the '78 Courier from,
It didn't have a 2.0L Mazda engine in it, it had a Ford 2.3L,
Mainly because Ford was building them at that point in time,
the early 70's Couriers were built by Mazda, up to '76 IIRC...
Canzus, could you possibly be located outside the United States? I have no desire to know where you live, but I thought all Couriers were imported into the USA the whole time Ford sold that model name, and they only stopped importing them when they started selling the Ranger (small size). I may certainly be wrong. tom

Reason: correct wording
I do live in the US... although I've lived in others...
The 2.3L was available in the Courier from '77 on,
just to be sure, I checked car-part.com, and found
that the '77 engine is the same as the '74 Mustang...
