Hello to all, my question is about the passenger side airbag on my 2001 Explorer Sport Trac. Has anyone had any luck disabling this feature? I have a niece who is at my house frequently and she is not adult size so i do not like her to sit up front with the airbag, however with my two children there is not a lot of room for her in the back. i know this sounds odd but i didn't really plan on that extra person when i bought my truck, and i love my truck would not change it for the world.
someone told me i could pull the fuse out but the ford manual said not to pull out fuses to disable it? any ideas? i cannot believe that my sisters Toyota Tacoma has the option to disable via a key and i cannot on my Ford which i consider superior.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Dec-02 AT 01:58 PM (EST)]Unfortunately Ford doesn't include the switch when you have a rear seat. Do not remove your airbag fuse. It will set a code in your SRS computer which will leave your airbag light on for 256 consecutive starts after the fuse is reinstalled. Back in late '97 I downloaded an airbag request form from www.nhtsa.gov and took that to my local dealer to have them disable mine. Since I was the first person to request the switches from my dealer, they didn't know the price. They had to order the switches. When they came in they would tell me how much it would cost. When they told me $150 per side I chose not to have them installed. I don't know if the form is still available at the NHTSA website or not now but you might want to look around.
OK, I just went and looked. You can still get them. Here is the link that will get you further information:
