'82 wiring problem

My problem is with a 1982 F350 Diesel that belongs to one of my friends. The engine was swapped with a '74 460. The electrical was "rigged" to work under the hood and a push button was used to start the truck because a key was broken off in the ignition. All the electrical was removed with plans to be rewired and then the truck was left to sit for a long time. I started working on it and wired a new ignition key and the starter. What I need help with is the wiring of the coil and the distributor. I know that 12 volts go into the + on the coil, but not sure what the other terminal connects to. There are 3 wires on the distributor a black, orange, and purple. There is no ECC. Shop manuals with schematics don't really help because none of the original harness is there to match wires. I need something simple that will tell me where those wires should be connected. Any help would be appreciated.

It connects like this. And yes, you do need the resistor going to the coil. This is a good diagram if you are not using the original style ignition switch. You may have to change the starter relay to an older style wit the two small terminals(yours may only have one). The original style ignition switch had an extra set of contacts to do the job of the small "I" terminal on the starter relay. If you do have an original style switch, I would suggest getting a Haynes manual to figure out the wiring. But you can wire it like this diagram shows, and it will work too.
