I am looking at upgrading from my 92 explorer to a 95 to 99 explorer. I wanted to ask you guys if you knew of any problems namely the power train and what kinds of automatic transmissions they used in these models.
Get a 97 or later with the 5R55E if you get a V6. It's a little better. When you get it drop the pan and do a filter change. Before you put the new filter on, re torque the valve body bolts to 9 ft-lb. They will very likely be loose. A lot of folks have had gaskets blowing out on this tranny effecting OD and first. Make sure you have heat and AC. Many people including myself have the blend door problem which can cost you $1K to fix.
I had a '98 Sport 2wd with the 4.0 and ran it for two years with no problems. I have a '99 XLT 4wd SOHC now and have had it for two years with no problems at all...
The blend door is a small actuator door that cotrols the amount of heat into the vents(only automatic climate control), if it goes out it is a costly fi$500-1,000).
I own a 97 Eddie Bauer and it is an awesome SUV! I got the V-8(5.0L) and it has lots of power and is very comfortable to drive not to mention the history of the 5.0L is very good, not to say the 4.0L is not a good motor, I have a 4.0L in my 90 Ranger and it too is very strong. I have had no mechanical problems with my X at all, just the blend door issue and that is it, I only have 50K but I do my routine maintnence and have alot of faith in this "BAD BOY".
I would get an Explorer with either motor. V-8(hint,hint)
