clutch problems on 91 explorer - slave cylinder?

I have been having problems with the clutch not engaging on my 91 explorer (149,00 miles).
Fluid has been leaking, but not from the master cylinder. I end up filling the fluid resevoir every couple of days. Local auto parts store thinks is might be the slave cylinder.
Lately, rattling sounds are coming from towards the middle when taking off.
Is there a good test to make sure and how hard is it to replace this?
If it's not the slave cylinder, what else could be wrong?
