I had my Explorer serviced over a year ago. I was reading some of the thing that were done to it. It says 'Recall O1M101 Cam Chain Guide Assembly Inspected No Service at this time'. Can I still go back to the dealer and get this done as a recall and at no charge?
Also, I see in some of the posts that there was a TSB for the Cam Chain Tensioner, which was causing rough idle when cold. Can the giude assembly be related to that also? Im having the symptoms of the TSB. I cant have the TSB done, im over 72,000.
01M01 is for the cam chain guides. When they fail, you will know it. Your engine will sound like a very bad Cummins Diesel engine even after the engine warm up. 01M01 extended the warranty on your guides to 7 years, 100K.
The camshaft tensioners were covered under 00M12. When they fail, your engine will make a rattling noise for the first few seconds of start up but will go away once the engine warms up. The noise is no where nearly as loud as it is when the guides fail. This one ends at 6 years, 72K miles.
If you think your guides have failed then as long as you have less than 100K on your engine, then you are still elegible (provided they have failed). If your noise is due to the tensioners then you might still have a valid argument for getting it repaired under the program, especially if you have it documented that you had it in for a noise complaint within the last 12 months or 12K miles. The standard Ford warranty on repairs is 12/12K. It doesn't look like they even looked in to the possiblity of 00M12 when you had it in. That's not your fault.
Well I had taken it in last year for the symptoms, and they couldnt replicate the problem. But the reason is because I had to drive 40 miles to getto them and my engine was already warmed up. And thats exactly what I told them, my engine was having rough idle when cold. I know they didnt look it up because I read all of the invoices, and none of them say anything about it. I had to take my truck in more than 5 times to get the problem fixed. But what I think happened, is it was already spring and getting warmer, so the symptoms stopped. And now that its cold again, they started.
Does anyone know the limitations on this TSB number, I KNOW this its whats causing my tranny to slip.
TSB#9996
It has to do with the tranny slipping/having delayed engagements when cold.
No, the cam chain guide won't affect how your engine idles when cold. They will make your engine rattle slightly for a few seconds until oil pressure build up. The lower intake manifold o-rings can cause your idle to go from about 400 RPM to 1200 RPM for a couple of minutes until the swell up and seal the leak.
With regards to TSB 99-9-6, it doesn't apply to yours. It applies only to remanufacturered 4R70W transmissions which on the Explorer only came with the V8. Here is the text from the TSB:

This concern is ONLY for vehicles with Ford Quality Remanufactured (FQR) 4R70W Transmission Exchange Units With Julian build dates between 062-97 And 04099 (corresponding serial numbers are between R0475797 and R0771887).
ISSUE
A delayed or no 2-3 upshift, primarily when the transmission is cold, may be evident on some vehicles In some cases, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0782 may also be present. This may be caused by fluid pressure leakage past the larger diameter seal of the 2-3 accumulator.
ACTION
Replace the 2-3 accumulator piston using a revised piston. The revised piston will increase seal/bore interference, eliminating any internal leak relating to the 2-3 accumulator piston reducing the possibility of 2-3 upshift concerns. Refer to the appropriate Service or Workshop Manual for replacement procedure."
