So I chickened out and replaced the motor. The instructions on web site are clear, but pay particular attention to the parts about the electrical connection. I apparently did something wrong in that part because now my transmission won't shift out of first. (I am posting my own question about this shortly.)
Hardcore 4X4 folks almost always want to replace the electrically operated hubs with manual ones. I don't know why, but I am not a hardcore 4x4 guy and I _hate_ getting out in the mud, sluch, snow, and ice to lock the hubs. YMMV.
Anyway, you may be able to find a cheaper motor like I did or you may just want to rebuild yours. Either way, you should come out cheaper than the dealer. But watch that plug wiring. <g>

The stock auto hubs are mechanical hubs that automatically lock when the drive shaft spins (it doesn't spin unless your in 4x4)...
People replace them with manuals for a couple of reasons..
1: You can buy a set of manual hubs with conversion kit for less than the cost of 1 automatic hub
2: The auto hubs are generally weaker than the manual hubs..
3: You can have 2 wheel drive low range using manual hubs (put the truck in 4x4 mode without locking the hubs)..
Those are just some of the reasons..
You can lock in the front hubs when your in 2x mode.. (don't leave it like that all year etc).. but if you "think" you might need 4x4.. just lock them in.. It does lower your mileage some, but if you think your gonna need them.. your mileage is most likely already low.
