Predator turbo lag

I just installed the 65 HP program (truck is completely stock other than program) and it runs great! (thanks MotorHaven!). The question is that when I am at a stop and punch it, it takes about a second or two for the truck to move. Once the rpm's get up, the truck is a rocket, but you know...I always want more.

I waited to jump on it for a few days because of the five cold start transmittion learning period, but should I have done that?

When it had the stock program, the turbo lag did not exist. Is this a common thing, or is there something that I need to do?

Thanks

My experience is that turbo lag is reduced with the 65HP program. Check for codes.

I checked, and there are no codes. I checked the version on the programmer, and it is 7R34. Anything else I might check?

Mine in 'stock' tune has some lag as well.. Bout, the same with the 65 tune 'ONLY' when it hooks up Yee Haa!! Like a speeding locomotive.. If merging into traffic, I hold the brakes 'just' a bit before launch.. Either tune..

R34c is the latest Predator version. Download it from the Diablo Sport download site. They have all the instructions how to upload it to the Predator. Easy to do. Read and follow the instructions and you will be ok. I had the r34 version and I don't recall a lag.
Do you have adjustable pedals? You might have your tech check the accelerator pedal. If it is not putting out the right output, could cause problem.

I looked at the R34c, and will update it, but it stated that the new version does not affect any of the tunes.

Don't have the adj. pedals, so no chance there.

Turbo boost 101

Actually it IS a function of how ANY turbo-charged engine operates...

sorta like the chicken or the egg -
you gotta have something before the other can be...
but in OUR trucks case, there is a correct answer...
you gotta have boost before real power,
but you have to have exhaust going thru the turbo before it can make boost !
so our boost must come before REAL power…

our trucks build the REAL power this way:
(apologies if this is too much of a primer for those in the know)
(or if I have NO clue what I'm talking about here )

1) the normally aspirated engine is fired....
2) after it burns the fuel to get going, it send the exhaust out thru the turbo
3) the turbo has an impeller in the exhaust flow that is connected to an impeller in the intake flow... (somewhat like a gearbox in that it has two sizes)
4) as the exhaust force builds, it spins the impeller which in turn spins the connected impeller in the intake side
5) the intake air is then compressed and FORCED into the intakes at a MUCH higher rate which gives much more air to allow firing the fuel at much more efficient rate... MORE POWER !

Bottom line...
you have to build boost to get the exceptional power ANY turbo charged engine can generate ~~~
no boost – very little power…
Even a jet plane has a pause when it starts off !!! but then hold on…

Try this in a safe place....
in an auto... hold the brake with your left foot...
increase the throttle to about 1000 to 1500 rpms for just a count and HOLD on as you drop the brake and floor the throttle at the same time...
That's called "NO TURBO LAG !"

All I have to say is WOW!!!!!

I guess that I let the turbo wind up too much because before I knew it, I thought that some fog was rolling in!!! (even though it is almost 100 today).

Boy, the truck just lights up the tires if you let the turbo kick in too much.

What a blast

Now I wish I didn't know because my tires are going to need to be replaced!

Thanks JD, I was going to talk about turbo lag issues but I'm a little gunshy after all the other controversial subjects discussed. The last time I got into that discussion I got a lecture from a Mercedes owner that berated me saying if a Mercedes car doesn't have turbo lag then the 6.0L shouldn't either.

Too bad that we get gunshy -
it hurts to have your toes stepped on after they are already sore !!!

But don't know how it's physically possbile to build turbo boost until you build exhaust flow --- but what do I know ....
I just make my living with logic - not with "dizzles"

but I promise you the last four planes I rode on had turbo lag !!!
They slam the throttles,
you hear the turbos start to whine and
THEN you start to move.... just like in our trucks !

Maybe I should be in a Mercedes plane - then I'd unnestan :-)

OOPS - sorry to do that to your tire budget

Don't do it too many times...
but now you know where the OH NO point is if you need it...

If u hold the brakes too long in my Ex it STILL breaks away and will start squirming sideways !!!!

I blame it on TrucksTV - when he installed the Banks system for about 8 gazillion dollars... and did that WILD burnout....
I could hear the turbo whining up and he wasn't moving so figured it was a brake stand and tried it

but did you notice any turbo lag THAT time

Heck no !!! YOU were grabbing the OH NO handle

It's like "This heavy thing isn't SUPPOSED to be able to do that" ?!?!?!
