Well, I saw a trans temp gauge that had a blue arc from 0 to 170, a green arc from 170 to 240, a yellow from 240 to 260, and red after that. Sounds about right to me I guess.

When I've towed my 13,000# boat/trailer Memorial Day Weekend I saw 200 deg max. It was a 95 deg day here in Central Fla. Normal non towing I see 175 - 180 deg. Doesn't trans oil start to break down over 230 deg?

On the 4R100, with MERCON fluid, normal operating temp (per Ford) is 51*F - 248*F.

Not sure about the 5R110 and MERCON SP, but it is probably about the same or higher.

I have pulled with mine over a 11.7k and 10.9k and 11.9k passes, all within 33 miles and never read more than 190 degrees. Which corresponded to the Ford gauge 5/8 of full sweep.
The lowest altitude of the pull was 4995.

I pulled my toyhauler up and down the California mountains around Idyllwild in 100 deg F heat and the max temp was 192 deg F. This was on a winding two lane highway where the T/H mode was getting a pretty good workout. Once I got back on I-15 South heading back to San Diego the temp dropped back down to 172 to 175 deg F while the outside temp remained in the high 90s.

Sure would have been nice for FORD to put some numbers on the gauge....gosh how hard could that have been....I supposes we should not go the way of the hood blanket.

Hey Tim, I just had a friend of mine order a SD 6L off of my window sticker. It came in about two weeks ago and it didn't have a hood blanket. I told him to go back and tell them my 04 has one and his doesn't. They gave him one and installed it no questions asked. They also told him the price went up $200 from the time he ordered to the time it came in. Maybe that's why they didn't hesitate to put a $70 blanket in.

A blanket looking thing, which is attached under the hood and to the hood, for sound suppression and heat rejection.

In reality, it looks more like insulation than it does a blanket, we just call it…………that.
