I kinda started this question in the 86 column, under a different heading...it was a different main topic, but I tacked it onto that. I guess this is probably a better place to ask, sorry about that.
I have an 86 F250 2wd diesel, 6.9 with a C6 tranny in it. I was told that I could get an E4od for it, and bolt it up, with only having to replace my driveshaft with a shorter one. Is this true, or do I need to do something else to the truck to match up an E4od...and will it be compatible with my setup?
the "e" in e40d is for electronic. the e40d needs a computer. It might work with out the computer, but I think the computer controls the od and the locking torqueconverter.with out those you have an expenseve, heavy c6. I dont know what it would take to put a computer in your truck. mabee it dose not need all of the computer stuff.
For overdrive in your '86 F250 with diesel, you may have to go with an aftermarket overdrive unit that goes after the transmission. Gear Vendors and US Gear make them. If your truck was lighter and your engine was a small block gasser, I would say swap the C6 for an AOD, but I don't think the AOD is strong enough for your diesel 3/4ton. I agree the E4OD would be nice but would likely be a very difficult swap because of the computer/wiring/sensors.
www.baumannengineering.com sells controllers and harnesses for E4OD swaps. I have had good luck with this company. Good tech support, good products, but prices are a little bit high.
