cross over exhaust

cross over exhaust

My friends 56 is now on the road. It is supposed to ahve a 272 light duty motor. Seems to fit 2bl carb. I'm puzzled by the cross over pipe on the exhaust system at the front of the motor. pipe leaves a flange at the front of each header and crosses over joining the headers together. Headers have a triditional real exit. the corss over on the passenger side appears to have a bi-metal spring butterfly valve. Any ideas what this beast actually is?

The driver side would only have the one exit... to the x over pipe.. the exhaust would exit on the pass side to the engine pipe.Have not seen any x over system with rear exit on both sides.

The spring loaded valve is closed when the motor is cold, open when the spring heats up with motor. This is used to block the drivers side exhaust from exiting, and forces it back through the pipe and over to the heat crossover in the intake which then exits the gas out the passenger side intake till the motor reaches operating temp. Hopefully I explained this clearly and correctly. -4speed

edit: seems we posted at the same time, yes you are correct in being traditional ford.
