I got a 86 F150, and I got a premium dolby sound radio from the junkyard. The tape player works, but it didn't play very well. I got a tape cleaner, and ran it though a few times and it was working good. Went to use it while I was driving a few days later and it sounded bad and tried to eat the tape. I cleaned it with a Qtip with the cleaning fluid on it, and used the tape cleaner again. It almost ate another tape but then it was working fine. I think it still needs some help.
Also, sometimes when you eject the tape it dosn't spit it out enough for you to grab it and pull it out.
Seems like the whole thing needs a really thourough cleaning. How can I do it? Thanks.
If the tape cleaner didnt do it, I would remove it from the truck and then bench clean it. Take the covers off and clean with a electrical grade cleaner. Then I would lubricate the rollers with a light grade oil. After sitting in the yard for awhile it probally needs it.
How should I bench clean the tape player? As soon as I got it I put it in, and the ***** didn't work very well, so I took it out and took the cover off, I couldn't see the tape mechinism from there. I was able to clean the ***** with contact cleaner and reinstall and now the radio works great.
If you've already cleaned it with the cover off, then you'll most likely without having to totally dismantle the thing, won't be able to get to it. Take a qtip with light oil and see if you can get to the rollers and mech. through the cassette door. If this don't work, you'll have to get into the radio.
Ok, it seems to be working better with use. I see that it looks like one of the two drive wheels inside is a little weak. It will play fine and fastforward/rewind fine with the one wheel, but if you flip the feed direction (not tape) the other wheel dosn't want to play as fast or fastforward/rewind as fast (or at all). My solution has been just play the tape the other way, maybe use will free up the other one. Otherwise, any tips? Thanks!
