Power Steering Woes Continue

So about two weeks ago i told you all about how I replaced my steering box on my 79' and then appeared to screw up the pump by not bleeding it down properly. Well this past weekend, I replaced the pump...put the truck on stands...turned the tires manually until the sytem sucked the fluid in...let it bleed out the refill hose...and filled it back up...started the truck up, and the pump wasn't helping the steering...with the wheels off the ground, the steering was just as tough to turn as when the truck was off....no screeching (since no load) but after a minute,..I could hear the bearings starting to make noise. Meanwhile...plenty of fluid in it. THen, I shut it off in frustration, and whatch the fluid overflow the pump!

I'm at a total loss here. I was going to remove the hoses and check for blockage or something....

Thankfully this is no longer my daily driver,...but I was hoping for some summer fun....any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan

Nothing personal, and I dont mean to insult you but....hoses on the right side? The fluid goes through only one way.

The only reason I mention this is because it seems you have done what you are supposed to do. I would be at a loss myself.

Good luck with it.

no insult taken....fortunately for me,....the hoses only go on one way....both hard lines to the box have different size fittings....as the saying goes...even I can't screw that up....

OK I read your post again.... You should not attempt to bleed the pump with the engine off. That will place the fluid back into the resivor and possibly dump it back out the cap. Start the motor, and work the steering back and forth. That will allow the pump to fill the lines.

Dam theres not much to this set up, pump, couple hoses, and steering box. 2 pumps and still the same thing, fluid is moving so the hoses are ok, must be the steering box! OR and this happen on my 79 bronco and I thought it was the power steering as well, dam U joint in the steering rod was siezed up, dam thing was hard as hell to steer. Oh but you have fluid pooring out, yeah you got blockage, pump is pushing it out but its not returning from the return line? Unhook the return line and starter her up for a sec, fluid should shoot right out.

I agree with bossind...may make a bit of a mess...bit it is a good way to tell if the box is seized or there is something keeping the steering from turning internally. It will at least rule out your pump.

If the power steering pump can not pump fluid thru a blocked line or a bad PS unit it will dump the fluid over the pressure relief. This will rapidly heat the fluid and cause it to boil as well as cause the pump to make noise.

you can always pull the lines and blowing them out with an air hose just to make sure you have no blockage.

Well thanks guy s for all the input. I'm gonna pull the lines this weekend...and see what shakes loose. I really hope its not the box...being that its a new one. Frankly, I've never had so much trouble with a ps pump in my life...typically after a couple of minutes of it running,..it works itself out...so this is just silly. If its the lines,..then shame on me for not checking them I guess. But the strange part is that the orig pump was fine before the box swap....ug. I'll let you all know what happens.

Thanks again.

blocked lines

I've seen a blocked line cause the reservoir to overflow - if they're original, it's a good idea to check or replace them, also, something could have crimped the cooler line - that loop in front of the crossmember. Good luck!!

I had a very similar problem with my 79, heres what I did:

Put the front on stands and turned the wheel lock to lock about 50 times.
Then I took the return hose off the back of the pump and ran it into a bottle. Started the truck and poured fluid into the pump until no more air bubbles came out of the return side. Hooked it all back up and it was golden.
