96 Explorer code 420 any ideas?
I have a 1996 Explorer XLT 4.0 2WD w/ 107000 mi. I bought it in August, and I got a check engine light about 2 months ago (code 401, insufficient EGR flow). I pulled the EGR valve + DPFE sensor and both seemed fine, so I reinstalled them. I cleared the codes and 401 never came back, but I did experience wildly varying fuel economies (between 16 and 21 MPG. Typical use for me is a 360 mi round trip in open highway, so my MPG should be fairly constant).
Last week, I got a check engine light again, but couldn't pull the code until today (code 420, catalyst system below efficiency). I replaced the O2 sensor behind the cat and cleared the codes, but after reading other posts I'm not sure that was the problem. When I bought the vehicle in August, I did a complete new-to-me-car maintenence program (major tune up...I spent about $400 for everything as a DIY), and at that time I got 21 MPG with a full load (I was moving at the time).
I noticed a few other posts here from folks with code 420 or EGR codes, so I was wondering if anyone has ideas about what I should check, or maybe what worked for them. My next trip will be a 1000 mi round trip so I'd really like to get my 21 MPG back rather than 16!!! Hope someone can help!
