Manifold/ Header Bolts

Here in a month or so I am planning on installing a set of Banks Headers. What I am worried about is the bolts. Have many people had problems with broken bolts. I have been reading some recent posts, and I am getting a little worried about the possibilty of some broken studs. My V10 has about 75,000mi on it and has been out here in AZ with wery little exposure to snow/salt. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would try to hold the studs with a small wrench and loosen the nuts. 5mm for the studs, 13mm for the nuts. More than 1/2 the studs came out on mine when I was trying to remove the nuts.

installed borla headers today. took the wheel well cover off passenger side and saw a broken bolt. thanks ford. the bolt next to it fell off in my hand. rusted on both sides. only broke one on my own.

like v10man said, i turned the nut and the bolt together. pain in the but but only broke one. bought the two piece easy out from sears and pulled the broken bolts. the flex head gear wrench was key.

just keep all bolts loose till you get the y pipe on. i had them tight and it was tough to line up the y.

gotta figure it saves about 400 to do it yourself

good luck!

Installed the banks system over the weekend and all the studs came out slick as could be. I was worried also, but no problems here. Flyinford, did you install the power pack or just the headers? How do you like the sound if you installed them yet?

Mine has 72K, and I broke 4 studs. The two back ones on each side. I soaked them in penetrating oil ahead of time, but I don't think it would make much difference. They didn't break because they were stuck. They broke with almost no torque at all. I'll easy out them when I get the engine out, and I expect them to come out fairly easy.

And no, you don't have to pull the engine to get them out; it's coming out anyway.
