funky ABS issue - 96 explorer
He has a 96 Explorer with the v8 and AWD. Every now and then when he pushes on the brake pedal (i.e. coming to a stop) the truck makes the sound like mine does when it is doing the ABS diagnostic, the only thing is that it is louder and longer lasting than that. The sound is like the ABS is kicking in for no reason (dry roads, straight stop, etc). During this time frame the stopping power goes to very little and if he releases the brake and re-applies it works OK. A trip to the dealer yielded some replaced brake components and the truck was OK for a few days. But the problem has come back. The ABS light is not on in the truck so it thinks things are OK.
My current suggestion to him was to locate the fuse for the ABS and yank it, it is better to have no ABS than to have no brakes!
thanks!
