open air cleaner ?

Reading the hood scoop thread I saw that its bad to have a open air cleaner.
I mad a new top plate for mine making it open and gained some power. Can this hurt anything? I know cool air is better but this helps.
PS noise level goes up alot almost to much in the cab

I tired a smaller top on the aircleaner on my 6.9, just big enough that it sealed to the filter itself, all I can say about the noise both inside and out is LOUD. The truck got lots of looks though. It does sound good though.

sorry should have given all the info
yes from the engine compartment
none turbo
yes filter

351m- sounds like the same setup the top plate is just big enough to cover the filter.

Is it ok to do this?
The noise is almost to much.

Thanks

It does,mt seem to hur t so I am gonna say yes as long as its not getting unfiltered air. But yea the noise is nuts, not good on a long trip. Did that on a '95 van with a 5.9L and when you punch it you can watch stuff on the engine cover move around.
