1992 Explorer automatic transmission problem
I have seen this problem mentioned before, but in my case whatever the problem is also causes the engine to run very hot after a few miles, to the point of boiling the engine coolant. I haven't seen anyone mention that aspect before. After the initial problems shifting into (D)rive, everything seems to shift normally as far as I can tell. I can't drive very far, however, b/c the temperature gauge quickly rises to hot. There is ample ATF.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
This thread will be moved to the Explorer forum, as this is the Workshop forum.
As stated in the announcement above, No truck tech talk in here.

Which came first -- the overheating or the slipping transmission? The overheating is probably caused by low coolant, a bad thermostat, bad fan clutch/fan, clogged radiator... This may have caused your ATF to get cooked. Other than that, I'm not sure the two problems are related. I would suggest you treat them as separate problems.
I just went through this same thing on our 1992 Explorer....I was sure I was in for a new Tranny...but it ended up being the Modulator on the side of the tranny.....one way to tell if the modulator is bad is....diconnect the rubber hose going to it and see if tranny fluid runs out....if it does....a $12.00 part will fix it.....
email me if you have any further questions???
