460 MH build up.
After looking at the mess of vacuum lines, i decided not to tackle the aluminum intake and left the stock iron intake on. The headers were going to be done at the last part of the build-up but time constraints and cash prevented this. The only performance item i did put on was the Timing Chain.
I bought a 3 key timing chain from PAW for $70 and installed it. It was really a pain because i decided to take the front of the van apart to get to it. The grill, oil cooler, tranny cooler, lines, brackets, radiator, belts..Etc. I replaced most of the parts that go out after a while - like the water pump, belts, coolent hoses (all of them), ps hoses, transmission cooler lines, thermostat, ...etc. The list goes on. Thats the reason i didnt have any money for the headers. I set the timing chain to 0* tdc and didnt reset the ign. timing so it was 8* father advanced at 19*btdc. I also removed the passanger side exhaust manifold and surfaced it and reinstalled it was a real exhaust gasket.
So heres the part everyone wants to hear-
Did it give me any more power? The answer is yes. Initially I didnt notice anything from a dead stop. Acceleration still seamed the same with only a small increase maybe when the timing was at 19*. The real indication was when i was on the freeway. Before when i had trouble and felt bad keeping it at 55mph, now i was having a hard time keeping it under 65.
Also i dont know why this happened, but before i retimed it, it was running at initial 19*btdc and even going up hills i didnt hear any pining at all, oppose to the pining it got at 9*btdc with the old timing chain. Before i headed back on my trip i retimed it back to 9* and still cruised great at 55mph.
