My son has a nice '95 ranger with a 2.3 4 cyl. he is wanting (or rather begging) to put a performance muffler on it. Has anyone had any experience with problems or damage when switching mufflers? I once took the catalytic converter off of my '89 ranger and two days later a spark plug melted down and ruined the engine. I thought the converter was clogged and i think when i eliminated it, i leaned the engine too much. I do NOT want to repeat this damage. Will a performance muffler mess up this engine? I will leave the converter in place. Thanks for any advice, Kent
no, a muffler will not hurt the engine. mufflers do not affect the way an engine runs as far as being lean or rich the way removing a converter can. what it does affect is backpressure (resistance to flow) and obviously the sound.
if it were me id get a smooth sounding muffler, on the quieter side unless he wants everyone to know its a 4 cylinder. something like a 3 chamber flowmaster, gibson, or dynomax turbo muffler would sound good.
My 98 Ranger 2.5L 4cyl has a Flowmaster 40 series with a 2.5" cat back system. People think I have a 4.0L with the way it sounds. No damage at all. It might actually help out the engine life unless he constantly drives it heavily just to hear the nice sound it makes (just like I do ).
I just put a Flowmaster 40-series on my '89 2.9 yesterday, leaving the two stock cats in place. They muffle it so much that the Flowmaster just gives it a nice exhaust note, just a touch louder than before. 40-series Flowmaster is (I think) a two-chamber. Probably sound good on a 4-cylinder. -TD
i have a forzaflow muffler on my 2.5 98 ranger and i like it very much. It gives off a nice deep tone and even made a slight difference in throttle response.
This is funny timing. Just tonight i was over at a buddies house messin around. (you know how friends can get you into trouble). We somehow decided to take my muffler off. (why we didnt do this to hs car i dont know). Well it was only two bolts so i said whatever. We disconnected the cat back system and wired it out of the way. I drove it home like that. I thought it had a nice tone too it, just way too loud, and a little ricey when you let off. needless to say i reconnected it as soon as i got home.
