Looking for anyone who has bought one of the Explorer Express superchargers for their 5.0. Was wondering their opinion before I dropped the card on the table and had them ship me one.
that was my first pick.but two factors have kept me from tring it.the eaton charger is only good to about 350 hp.which is ok for a stock motor.i'm about there with out it.# 2 being pd chargers(positive displacement) put more of a strain on the crank then the centrif's.but the only centrif are the powerdynes.which had internal belt problems but only when pullied for 9psi.ford motorsports now sells them for 2600.which is a better price for the same 6psi.i'm sorry i didn't help just passing along some info.let me know what you find and how it works.i think i'm going with the fms/powerdyne blower.but will talk to explorer express before i purchase may be they can do a bigger one to handel more hp?
I owned a 90 T-Bird Super Coupe for 9 years factory equipped with an Eaton. The charger was sweet. Never gave me an ounce of trouble, put 60k on it and the buyer is still out driving it today.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Mar-02 AT 09:07 PM (EST)]Well, I went ahead and ordered it. I considered getting the Powerdyne, but wanted the power on the lower end as well. The Vortech I had on my Mazda (built a 302 and put in it) did most of its work over 3000rpms.
I talked to John Vanek at Explorer Express yesterday, and they have 3 s/c left. After that, they are not going to make anymore. He said they haven't decided what they are going to do...
Faux - What all have you done to yours to get it close to 350 horses?
Yeah - charger was $3299.95 plus $50.00 shipping to GA. I had him fax me the install instructions so I could look them over before it got here. They have made this pretty simple.
How much did the cam you used help out? I have been deliberating on what I was going to do about that - can't stand this dinky thing Ford has used on this motor. What a waste...
i don't know.i tore apart the ford crate motor before i put it in.i have no reference point.before my tranny mods.6.0 0-60 was norm.after i'm down to 5.5.it roars above 3500 all the way to 6200 shifts.
Well, I received it today. Am going to the track on Fri night to see what it does now, then am going back after I get it in. Curious to see the numbers. I know tthey won't be great, but want to know the difference... I am also trying to find a Dyno around here to get the specifics on it before and after...
Well, got it on, but broke a plug boot this weekend, so will have to wait until I get that taken care of before really seeing the gains.
From when I drove it though, it did add a lot more power in. I didn't have the heat shields on the wires, and just had them routed in to try it out, so I lost a lot of power on the high rpm's through the wires. Skipped real bad.
Had a few problems because I have the other style top plenum and EGR setup than what Explorer Express built the kit for. I had to reconfigure the vacumm lines, idler pulleys, and serpentine belt.
Hello, I have recently bought a 1998 Mountaineer V8 AWD.
What exactly did you do to your transmission? I have installed many AOD shift kits, and I have liked Transgo's the best.
I just installed the X-spec kit from John Vaneks Explorer Express.
Best wishes,
Don
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-02 AT 01:06 AM (EST)]There are a couple of kits for the 4r70w's - TransGo makes one, Baumann has a kit, and Jet makes an electronic shift kit also. I think E.E. sells the TransGo and the Jet. I am running the Jet electronic kit right now. When the other engine goes in, I will more than likely go to the Baumann mechanical kit then.
I do not have any personal dealings with either, but from what I understand from those who do have them, they are both good kits. I am leaning more towards the Baumann personally...
i had a trans go in my reg aod very nice.during my last dyno pull the aod exploded in to pieces so i upgraded to the 4r70w it was very mushey i used a level 10 shift kit it seems ok firm at wot but still soft during normal cruising.i feel my aod shifted better with the transgo.but my chip may have some effect on the shift firmness.i will see during my final tune if they can firm it up some.my trany guy says there are simple elec pressure boosters like $5.00.which come with 2 different resistors for firm and extra firm.the stock converter is much too tight for mine.and my pi stallion from the aod was so nice.i am getting 1 for the 4r70w in january.i will try the cheap line boosters then.and post the results after i see how they work.just some more info, sorry no diffinitive answer
Thanks for the thoughts. The best transmission I've had was in my first 1991 Mark VII LSC SE. It was an original AOD which I installed a Transgo shift kit into. The part throttle personality was unmatched by any manufacturers kits. Transgo significantly alters the downshift responsiveness and sensitivity, without any harsh side effects. All of the other companies only seem interested in WOT.
I wrecked that car, and then rebuilt the AOD with blue plates, kolene steels, and AODE best internals. It now waits for a new LSC SE with twin turbos.
Last year I bought two 1995 Crown Vic police cars. After installing a Transgo systems correction kit in one and a shift kit in the other, I have had a squeel in both on the 1-2 shift above 30% throttle. I believe the police calibration is unique.
I am going to call Transgo now to see if they have an answer for this, if not, I will be far less likely to buy or promote their products.::
