I did a search for this before posting, and didn't find anything on the subject. Sorry if this has been done already, but if so, I couldn't find it.
I blew a tire the other night, and the tread came off, slapped the inner fender on my E-350 based RV, and tripped the fuel shutoff switch.
I pulled over right away (thank God) and was about a foot off the interstate lane when the engine died. Lots of trucks going by blaring their horns at me as if I had a choice where I was at. Sure could have used some road flares or those little reflective triangles in addition to the hazzards to say I'm stuck.
Since then I've been looking at emergency kits, and the one's I've found tend to have jumper cables, a flashlight, a bottle of tire inflater, one flare if any, rubber gloves and some bandaids. What kind of crap is that?
I know there was a thread on what guys keep in their toolboxes (the big ones you hang in your truck), but how about general automotive emergency kit for any car, truck, suv, etc?
Here's what I think is a minimum:
Jumper Cables
Flashlight w/spare batteries
Flares (at least 3) or those reflective triangles (at least 3)
First aid kit (not just bandaids)
basic tool set (at least pliers, a knife, flat and phillips screwdrivers, and a crescent wrench)
Are white flags still considered a universal sign that you're standed and need help? If so, one of those as well in case the cell phone has no service for calling a tow yourself.
I got one for my Dad at Walmart. Can remember what it was called, something like "Just-in-Case". Its a black canvas bag, with most of the stuff you mentioned. It also has a tow rope, gas siphon pump, rain poncho, zip ties, electical tape, duct tape and card with a 1-800 # to call for roadside assistance. Doesn't have flares or tools, but you can just throw those in and its pretty complete. I have a large tool chest bolted in the back of my truck, so I got pretty much everything I could need in there.
zippo
leatherman
klien 10 in 1 screwdriver (or anthoer high quality multi screwdriver)
small socket set in a case
1/4"-3/4" wrench set (or metric depending on vehicle)
10mm wrench, 13mm wrench (very close to 3/8" and 1/2" and will sometimes grab a banged up bolt)
jack
cross lug wrench
tire iron or small crowbar
bulbs fuses and a small spool of wire
roll of quarters
8"-10" channel lock pliers
some kind of hammer
jumper cables
all of it should fit in the glove box and behind/under the seat.
I used to work for a guy that would not buy tires for the truck until they blew out. So I bought a large standard screwdriver bit and a loooong extension. I put that in my cordless drill to raise and lower the Ford factory mechanical bottle jack.
