Stalling at idle..sometimes..

This is a great forum lots of info, I just got my powerstroke about a month ago. OK, THis started happening about two or three weeks ago on my 01 superduty f250 powerstroke. Sometimes at idle usually after a couple of minutes to an hour of driving. When I come up to a light the engine just stops. not all the time but infrequently seems like more and more now. A couple of times it got rough like it was going to stop but it didnt it got rough then smoothed out. All the guages and lights stay on. It just quits. I usually can restart in one or two tries sometimes three. Yesterday I was below hallf a tank it stalled and would not restart. I cranked till the batteries were almost dead. Then It started, I drove to a gas station to get some fresh diesel inthere and some lucas additive. Well it wouldnt restart just click, click. I tried to get a jump from a towtruck, The red dots were showing on the battery windows, dead. So, I had it towed home and I put the batteries on two chargers overnite and I havent tried to crank her over again yet till tonite. Could it be the fuel pump or maybe the Camshaft Position Sensor like I read on another post. Oh, I replaced the fuel filter last week thinking it could be that. Thanks

I would try the CMP like you think. Buy one at the local international dealer because they are way cheaper than the ford dealer. Scroll down to a post called "Experts...please help" review it and it should help you. Johnsdiesel has a quote on this post about where the CMP is and how to change it.

I think I am going to try and do that today. I called the ford Dealer it was 190 and the international dealer was 92. I hope this works and I hope I didnt cook something like a starter and/or battery. There was a something electrical is cooking smell after the last prolonged start attempt before it wouldnt start again.

Check the glow plug relay terminals. I have heard these get hot and can burn/corroide the terminal. Maybe with the prolonged cranking this could have been what you smelled. This should be around $25.00 at Napa dealer.

is that a visual inspection to tell if that was it. Nothing I could find looked wrong. are they in the fuse block which is under the hood on the drivers side?

your CMP is an electrical device, maybe this is what your smelling. you would know if your glow plugs and/or glow plug relays were going out cause you will find your self crankin the rig over more then normal. from what your saying i can say that im possitive that it is your cam position sensor, and if its not then you let me know what it is cause the things happening to your rig sound like a CMP failure, and if its not then by golly im not as aknowledgable on PSD's as i thought. Good luck

I agree with the cam sensor failure. If the glow plug system was failing in any way it would not start in the morning, but start fine after warmed up.

Well it used to start up fine all the time, mornings and after running it. it just was plagued with the intermittent stalling while running. The last time it stalled it wouldnt restart though and I cranked it enough that I think I burned out the starter. I replaced the CMP sensor but now that I recharged the batteries I only get a click click... I took the starter off and I am going to have it tested and replaced next so hopefully I will get her going again tonite if I pick up a starter today.

Well, I replaced the Cam pos sensor, charged the batts and I replaced the starter I burnt up... IT started right up... Runs great now... I even put new front shocks on.. The ride is so much better now. It let me feel good about working on it knowing the handling was going to be better too when I got her to run again. Thanks for all the advise looks like you guys were spot on with the Cam Positioning Sensor. How empowering it is to learn something new especially since this is my first Diesel and I didnt know even where to start looking for trouble I probably would have looked at the fuel pump first. I found out it has an 02 starter so it probably is an 01.5. Oh thanks for the tip to go to the international dealer for the sensor I saved 100 bucks and I found they are open till 11pm too. I guess I owe 94.5turbodiesel a couple of beers if he gets up to WA.

Superdoo, if you hang out on this board long enough you will learn quite a bit. It's a great place for us to pool all our knowledge and someone almost always has the answer.
