On my 1951 F5, I can't get the steering linkage between the steering column gearbox and the crossbar to hook all the way together (there is almost a half inch of extra space). It's the place where the cylinder with teeth comes out of the gearbox and the rod from the crossbar with the hole and grooves come together. I have a picture of it here http://www.geocities.com/fordgraintruck/index.html
Is this all right? I have the nut and lock washer all the way onto the threads but there are no threads sticking out. If this is a problem, how can I fix it?
Thanks
The way it is should work. It is a tapered fit, so it only goes on just so far.
Did you make sure the wide slot is lined up on the pitman arm and the splined shaft? If you don't have it lined up right, it won't go onto the shaft.
Are any of the parts new? Sometimes tolerances can be off a bit causing the setup you have - which is much better than having it tight against the frame.
I do have the wide slots lined up on the pitman arm and the spline. I didn't know it was a tapered fit though, that might explain it. All of the parts are stock and original so there shouldn't be any equipment problems. Thanks
