Car is an 88 Bronco II, 2.9, 4WD, automatic. Got a problem with my right rear tail light. The bulb burned out and I replaced it. Now the brake light is in the on position and the turn signal blinks faintly, with the headlights on. With them off I get no brake light and a dim turn signal on the right but, both work OK on the left. The lights worked OK prior to the burn-out. Could one of the resistance wires be bad? I appreciate any help. Oh, the back-up lights work OK also.
Sounds ilke you got the bulb in wrong .Take it out turne it 180 deg. and put it back in. Yea it sounds dumb but I learned the hard way on that .Yea Ive done it to.
Wish it were that easy, GrayRanger. I don't have the horizontal plug in type. I have the 1157 bulb, push in and turn. And yes, even though it makes no difference, I rotated it anyway and no luck. I tried another new bulb also, no go. That's what confounds me. Everything worked OK, the bulb burns out and it goes Tango Uniform. I do have a bad headlight switch, come to think of it. When I pull the switch out the headlights come on but, nothing else. I have to push slowly in until everything comes on. This is the 3rd switch I've put in but, never had a problem with the tail lights. I'm wondering if it could be a combination of the switch going bad and the bulb burning out that is the problem? Now I'm thinking what's causing the headlight switch to malfunction? I'm getting a headache. Thanks y'all.
Yea the headlight switch could cause your problem so could the smart stalk {turnsingal} and the brake light switch.I would fix the headlight switch first then work on the tail light problem.JMO
I have an 89 BII 4x4 and its having a similar problem, right blinker will sometimes stay on when i turn my headlights on. If my headlights are off then it works properly,, ive tinkered with it forever im not sure what the problem is... sorry to post this within your post, let me know what you find out. thx
Update. Changed the headlight switch but, did not fix the problem. Pin B2 (Tan/White wire) on the harness connector showed evidence of burning . The turn signals for the left don't always work either. I'm going to try a turn signal switch and see what happens.
Haven't got the turn switch yet, got another problem. When I turn the headlights on, the dome and cargo lights come on and they won't turn off. (Also in the last post I referenced Pin B2 and a Tan/White wire. That comes directly from the fuse panel). I'm kinda thinkin' something might be shorted to ground? What do you think?
beleive it or not..you might have to change all the stop/tail/turn/park bulbs..changing one bulb will change the resistance and cause funky problems in some cases.
Yes.. as IM says... check all bulbs and grounds in both tail lights...even if they worked before. If it's orgininal dielectric in there, you can still have some issues under it by this time. I had the same problems and only a full cleaning and rebulbing (is that a word) did the trick.
Got the tail light malfunction fixed. It was the socket, changed it and works good. Evidently I tweaked the contacts when I replaced the bulb the first time. Don't know how but, that's fixed. Still have the dome light problem. I do have diagrams it will just take time to figure out. Got a new problem. My oil pressure light flickers at idle in gear only. If I raise the RPM's 50-100 it goes out. The oil pump was replaced at rebuild about 50,000 miles ago. Could the sending unit or sensor be bad? I'm hoping it's not the pump. Thanks for your help.
