Minor Upgrades ??

Hi all,
I have a 2001 F 350 PS 4x4 6sp (36k miles). Not much offroad - pulling a travel trailer (7k) from Alaska to Mexico and all over the continent.
I do not plan to chip it. Does putting a new drop in filter (like afe Pro-Guard 7 or Amsoil) or ( better ?) a whole system (like AIS - sound and warranty) and/or changing the muffler (Walker ? other?) improve performance (not just lower egt) ??? Is it cost effective ??
Thanx a lot for your help, Isaac

an aftermarket intake is never a bad idea, assuming it still filters as good or better than stock, however alone it will not give you a noticible performance increase. It is usually a precursor to more in depth modifications that require a new intake. A straight through exhaust will yield a very modest gain, probably not enough for you to actually feel it, but your truck will know the difference. Both will reduce your EGT's slightly. Neither of those items is a bad idea, however you probably will not notice any difference unless your butt dyno is extremely sensitive.. Good luck

igutman1, I have an 01 also. Keep an eye on the tabs on the stock box, mine broke and was letting dirt in. These boxes are junk. I replaced mine with the Ford Severe Duty AIS. Much better setup! I like it. It is a little more than some of the aftermarkets. It didn't make much noticeable difference in mine, just most importantly cleaner air.

If you're interested in maintaining the warranty you can't go wrong with the Ford AIS intake. Replacing the stock muffler with a straight through design will also help airflow. Don't look for any major performance gains from only changing the air intake or muffler. It will give you a tiny bit more power, but other mods are needed for major gains in power. It should help keep your EGT down though. Beware of any claims from aftermarket companies that boast major power increases from using their intake. More air= lower EGT and the ability to burn more fuel but until you add more fuel, i.e. chip or tuner, the power increase will be minimal.

I have a 99 power stroke and pull a goose neck horse trail with living guarters. It always felt like I was driving into a 40 mph wind. I replaced my air filter assembly with the AIS and changed my exhaust with a 4 inch still 3-1/2 coming off the turbo and I can't begin to tell you what a big difference there is and how happy I am with the truck now. It feels like I have a 60mph wind behind me. I'm not going to add a chip for I feel I have all the power I need. I also changed my accel. pedal to a up dated one from Pauls performance to where I have no excessive travel, Insist respondence. Thanks to all the input on this site that lead me to these changes.
