ok heres my story
i have a F100 72 model with a V8 302. I was driving along and the diff started to clunck( it is now cracked). i put my foot on the clutch and it stalled.
I redid all plugs, leads, points, all filters (oil, fuel, air), new rotor button, condensor and finally restarted it and am now trying to set the timing and mixture to get it running real smooth.
The timming i was told was 6 deg BTDC but i am not sure how to find this. where you point the timming light there is a groove with a white line at the top, and the mixture on my holley carby is currently set at 1 and 3/4 turns.
Any comments on what the mixture should be or how to tell the proper timming would be much appreaciated.
look on your harmonic balancer for the degree markings and set the pointer to read at about 10 deg. with the vacuum adv. disconnected and plugged. as for the carb turn the air mixture screws in until it stumbles and then turn them out until max rpm is reached ,doing this with both screws and then set your final idle speed on the bell crank on the carb. Another very good way to set timing is using a vacuum gauge on the vacuum tree on your intake manifold and turn the dist clockwise until the highest reading is achieved and then turn it counterclockwise until the gauge drops 1in. and that will be your best timing.
