NO Forward or Reverse

I have a 94 Eddie Bauer 4WD Explorer. When I place the car in park it will move in whatever direction I push it. When I place the car in gear it will not move, I hear a grinding noise. I jacked it up the front and put it in gear and noticed the driveshaft is turning. I jacked the rear off the ground so both tires were up in the air and even tho' the driveshaft turned the tires would not turn. There is a roaring sound coming from the rear. I can turn the rear tire by hand and the opposite side does not rotate. Can anyone tell me what they think failed and how I can repair the vehicle. Thanks!

Sounds like you may have broken the spider gears or side gears or the pinion shaft that holds the spider gears or possibly an axle. Remove the rear cover off the diff and take a look. Chances are pretty good that whatever happened has caused considerable damage in there

Thanks! In looking at the differential, I saw two problems, maybe three.
1. The largest gear in the diff shows big time signs of grinding. It has rough edges and metal shaving appear in the bottom of the diff.
2. There is a gear in the rear of the diff that appears broken towards the rear of itself. This same gear does not engage the larger gear ( mentioned above). This appears to be the reason when I try to spin the wheels they do not spin independently. I noticed a lot of play between the pinion and the right axle (where the axle goes into the Pinion). Do you know of any books that can guide me through the removal and installation of these components. I really appreciate your help!

Changing diff gears is a very involved process, especially if you have never done it before. It takes some specialized tools and the tolerances are very exact. If you get off by more than a few thousandths of an inch, you can cause premature wear of the gears and you'll be replacing them again in 6 months. (Don't ask me how I know this...) Your best bet is to pay the money and have a professional do the job. I had mine done for less than 400 dollars (including parts). Good luck...

Thanks for the advice and the repair figure. I had no idea the repair would have been as sensitive. The money I save will be my own. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I really do like my Explorer and even tho' she getting up there in age (148K) she has been reliable and a fishing partner. Can't fault her now that she needs a little TLC.
