I have had my X for about 15 months (about 40k miles now - I bought it used when it was 1 year old), and have had no problems of any kind, until today. My son-in-law was driving it this morning on the freeway, with my wife in the car. They exited the freeway, and while proceeding to the stop sign at the top of the ramp, he said it felt like the front brakes "locked up" and there was a sensation of no braking assist from the front brakes. He narrowly missed another car in front of them. My wife described it as a loud grinding noise (just my luck that the one time something like this happens, I'm not in the car). After that, everything seemed to be fine. I drove the X myself this evening over 40 miles, and I had no sense that anything was amiss. Has anyone else had an experience like this with the brakes? It is not ABS related from what I can tell, and the dashboard is giving no warnings of any kind. I have an extended warranty from Ford. Do you think I should take it in to have it looked at? If they don't find anything wrong, they will probably want to charge me, but maybe its worth the risk since it was a problem with the brakes.... Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!
Had the X looked by a Ford mechanic. He says nothing is wrong and no error codes set in computer. He figures the driver hit a slick spot on the exit ramp, and the ABS kicked in for a second. The driver usually drives small 1/4 ton trucks, so this is possible. Better to be safe than sorry.....
I had to make a hard stop with very worn pads. It pulled hard in one direction, and kept pulling till they cooled. After the the brakes cooled all seemed ok. I replaced my pads the next weekend. I remember them being very thin, but I don't remember the exact measurement.
