If you are going to spend time and money on a swap, go for a cummins or a powerstroke - those old GM diesels are nothing to be desired. In the transmission forum, look for a post about frying clutches with a cummins - he swapped in a cummins in place of a 5.8 in his truck. Another thing to think of is can the truck handle the torque from the diesel; mainly be concerned if the truck is an F150.

Actually, a fun swap is to swap in the entire Dodge cummins powertrain, including the NV4500, then all you need is an aftermarket u-joint and shorten your driveshaft by about 2".
