I have a 83 F-150 with a 300cid it has a carter YFA carburetor 1 barrel non-feedback, I just rebuilt the carb yesterday it blows some black smoke in the mornings when i start it up (my poor fence is now black from the exhast LOL ) what is the adjustment for the air/fuel screw? I turned it in till it started to die then backed it out 3 turns. I'm getting about 9-11 MPG. Any coments would help thank you. Scott
The "air/fuel" screw is the idle mixture adustment. Turning this will change your mixture at idle only. Running mixture is controlled by the metering rod. Rich warmup is probably a consequence of improper choke adjustment. With a rebuild kit you get a list of instructions on how to adjust the choke and metering rod. Mostly these instructions are ignored on the assumption that if it was working before, then it should be okay now. It doesn't work that way. You need to systematically go through all of the adjustments and make sure that they are correct. And, be sure the electrical connection from the alternator to the choke heater, and the choke heater itself, is working. Follow all the directions. The poor gas mileage may be a result of over-choking or a poor metering rod adjustment; hard to tell from here. Also, you need to check your timing when you rebuild the carb. A properly tuned 300 cid six with the YFA should get at least 18 mpg on the highway. Mine has since new, still does, and it is a 4WD with nearly 300,000 miles on it.
Hi Charles. I have a carter YFA, tagged 7806s, non feedback in my truck.
